Statement on the killing of Palestinian Journalist Shireen Abu Akleh

Labour Friends of Palestine & the Middle East

On the 11th of May 2022, Palestinian Journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was shot by Israeli military forces whilst reporting on raids in Jenin and wearing a clearly visible press vest. LFPME extends our deepest condolences to her family and colleagues devastated by her death.

Her death is a shock to the Palestinian community, and it is a tragedy for Palestinians everywhere. This shocking incident must be regarded in the wider context of Israeli forces systematic targeting of journalists working in Palestine and its failure to properly investigate the killings of media workers.

This death follows a formal complaint that was submitted to the International Criminal Court last month by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate (PJS) and the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP).

LFPME supports the calls for an international, independent investigation by the International Criminal Court in order to uphold human rights and international law. It is imperative that the UK government keeps up the pressure on the Israeli Government to be held to account.
