LFPME welcomes the news that Hosni Mubarak has stepped down and congratulate the courageous people of Egypt.  We hope freedom and democracy prevails and the Egyptian people can move forward together to develop and stabilise their country, and help it prosper for the benefit of all its people.

We also hope that as Egypt transitions towards a new future, it can adopt policies that are in its national and regional interest and not in the skewed interests of other countries.

The Egyptians have a vital role to play to satisfy the needs of its people as well as secure peace and justice in the region. They can now play a more important role to help bring about a sovereign and free Palestinian state – based on 1967 borders in line with international law and UN resolutions.  They can support this by ensuring that sufficient aid to rebuild Gaza and feed its people can pass through the Rafah crossing.

On this historic day, we once again congratulate the achievement of the Egyptian people.
