LFPME hosts two successful fringe events at Labour Party conference 2010

The Labour Friends of Palestine and the Middle East (LFPME) hosted two successful fringe events at the Labour Party Conference on Sunday 26th September in Manchester.  Over 300 conference delegates and visitors attended the two events.

Michael White interviews Sir Gerald Kaufman MP

Our first event featured Michael White (Assistant Editor at the Guardian) interviewing Sir Gerald Kaufman MP; discussing his fascinating political career and engagement on issues related to the Middle East since the 1960s.

A captivated audience heard Michael White put a probing range of questions to Sir Gerald which covered his early life and family background, his political career, Zionism, and prospects for peace in the Middle East.  The interview was filmed by students from the University of Salford and can be viewed on our website and YouTube.

Ending the siege on Gaza

Our second fringe event was a jointly held with the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) and Unite entitled ‘Ending the siege on Gaza’.  Guests heard from Tony Woodley (Joint General Secretary of Unite), Andy Slaughter MP, Richard Burden MP, Hugh Lanning, and international guest, Palestinian Member of the Israeli Knesset, Haneen Zoabi.  All the speakers spoke about the importance of showing solidarity with the Palestinian people, pressed for an end of the siege on Gaza and highlighted the situation of Palestinians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and within Israel.

Both events helped underscore the importance of the Palestinian issue amongst delegates, Labour supporters and visitors at conference.  LFPME also had a stall for a day in the exhibition centre, which helped us promote the work of LFPME and sign up new supporters.
